Jimmy Hulland – Reflection
The UNE Volleyball match against Suffolk on DIG PINK night became a very nice assignment for this class because I enjoy watching sports. The game preparation and attention to small details throughout the match turned out to be my greatest success. I took notes about essential game moments and player achievements which helped me create an effective post-game story. The quotes I obtained from Kelsey Bradshaw and Coach Blanchard brought essential content to my story which elevated it beyond basic box score reporting. I should have responded faster to the game’s changing events during the match. The writing down of statistics part made me miss important court events which proved significant to the game. I will observe the game while taking notes simultaneously if there is a next assignment to achieve a better observation and note-taking skills. The process of creating a complete sports story after games surprised me because it requires extensive work. The task involved more than recording game events because it required me to develop a narrative while selecting appropriate quotes and transmit match emotions to readers who missed the game. The experience taught me to value sports reporters more because they work under extreme time constraints. The project taught me to enhance my reporting abilities while showing me how preparation and observation unite with storytelling techniques in sports journalism.
